Breakdown of the Backgammon Setup

The breakdown of the backgammon setup aims to illustrate starting positions of the game's pieces. The backgammon setup you'll see here is in accordance with what's commonly known as the conventional arrangement. These include where chips or checkers are positioned, where the doubling cube is placed, as well as where dice and dice cups are set. So what is the traditional backgammon setup or arrangement of its pieces and accessories?

Checkers: Each player has 15 pieces and they all start off from specific points on the board. And that's two on each corresponding player's ace-point (one-point), five on their mid-point (13-point), three on their eight-point, and five on their six-point.

Doubling Cube: The doubling cube is positioned on the center bar and facing 64 in conformity with the traditional backgammon setup. This denotes that the game stakes are currently at one point per game. Also, its position at the center of the bar illustrates its neutral ownership until either player offers it to their opponent.

Dice and Dice Cups: It's advisable that each player uses their own pair of dice and dice cup. In which case, they're positioned outside the board on each corresponding player's side. The dice are then thrown on the right half of the board. This eliminates the risk of runaway dice (where they jump out on to the floor) and confusion about whose turn it was at any point in time from when the game commences.

The conventional backgammon setup follows a strict checker placement. However, both players can opt to move clockwise as opposed to the more popular counterclockwise direction. In the more popular counterclockwise arrangement, players bear off to the right, hence, placing the ace-point on the lower right side of that backgammon setup. While the option of moving clockwise allows players to bear off to their left wherein the ace-point is appropriately designated on each player's lower left side of the board.

The breakdown of the backgammon setup in starting positions places all checkers on specific points on the board and the doubling cube on the bar. Two chips are placed on the ace-point, five on the mid-point, three on the eight-point, and five on the six-point that cover each player's 15 same-colored pieces. Dice and dice cups are placed off the board on each corresponding player's side. The only adjustable aspect about the conventional backgammon setup pertains to whether both players are moving either counterclockwise where they bear off to the right or clockwise where they bear off to the left of the board.
